One DIV to Rule Them All

Ran across this over at mezzoblue and had to snip:

Three DIVs for the design-gods painting on Macs,
Seven for the usability-lords in their websites of grey,
Nine for Windoze geeks doomed to debug,
One for the Zeld Man on his orange page,
In the land of New York where the pundits cry.
One DIV to size them all, One DIV to pad them,
One DIV to colour them all and in the browser style them
In the land of W3 where the standards lie.

Appologies to Mr. Tolkien.

Busy Times

Busy Times. Lots going on, not only for me, but the world in general.

I was in San Antonio on Friday, visiting an existing client and a prospective new client. The trip went well, but rain caused my flight back to be delayed.

The weekend was quite busy, with Church things and Birthday parties to go to and all. Then the news came Sunday morning that coalition forces had located and captured the rat himself, Saddam Hussein. Great day!

Monday was back to the hectic schedule, with a day or more worth of work to get done before lunch. Afterwards, I ran FOH sound for the Salesmanship Club’s annual roast/initiation dinner. The crew I was with put on a full multimedia show, including two-camera live shoot, pre-recorded and edited video segments, etc. All this while the audience was pelting the guys on stage with dinner rolls. Just like a fraternity party. I’m just glad I was back in the sound booth and not running a camera up front.

I’ve got two projects to get finished up this week, and two more are kicking off. Not sure when I’m going to get my Christmas shopping done. Woot!

DOW hits 10,000

The DOW closed above 10,000 today, for the first time since May of last year. The Conference Board projected 2004 to be the best economic year in 20 years. And the Commerce Department scales back the overall severity of the recession.

Go figure. Can we all just get on with it now?

Michael Lost His First Tooth

After much wiggling and whatnot, Michael lost his first baby tooth tonight. It’s been loose for a week or so, and he’s been wiggling it for days… finally he decided it was time for it to come out (it was apparently bothering him too much to be able to go to sleep).

After attempting to yank it out with just fingers (mine are just too big), we decided to give it a go with some string (well, sewing thread actually… it was so close to the next tooth that regular string probably wouldn’t have worked). Several attempts later I was beginning to think it wasn’t going to come out… the thread kept slipping off or breaking. We found some slightly stronger thread and doubled it up and after a little tugging, pop! Out it came.

Michael was rather pleased with himself, and was showing everyone the hole left by the extraction. He was also a little excited about the prospect of the tooth fairy showing up with some loot for the tooth.

Matthew has a loose tooth as well, but it’s not as far along as Michael’s was. But probably before Christmas.

Wow, another week

Another week gone by and I’m not posting… While things are busy, I must admit I just haven’t taken the time to post. My goal this week is to get back in the groove of things and update on a regular basis.

For starters, I saw the resurrection of the 70’s sci-fi classic “Battlestar Galactica” (the first two hours that aired tonight, anyway). It’s interesting how they’re paying homage to the original. In some ways it’s like the original happened, but in other ways it’s like it didn’t. The basic storyline is a retelling of the original movie that spun off the TV series, but at the same time, it’s set as though it’s taking place 40 years later. Sort of an alternative universe thing. I liked the character development and the various interactions going on, but the action was a bit slow, unlike the original.

Was nice to see them include the original theme music… they had a high-school type band play it during the ceremony to retire the Battlestar (of course, the Cylons attack then, and we’re off on the main plot).

Interesting take on the whole technology-averse luddite subplot. I just hope the thing doesn’t get too politically preachy… I watched the first five minutes of “The Reagans” on Showtime and saw just how far left that one was going to lean. Can’t decide if I’m going to watch the remaining 175 minutes…

Trip to Utah

I’m in Utah for the first half of this week, consulting with a client on our development method and approach to building complex workflow applications. How’s that for a mouthful?

Two things that are awesome:

  • Wireless high-speed Internet access in the airport lobby
  • First class

However, dial-up access in the hotel room: not so much.
